Changes in the 9th edition
- N2 now has two subgroups: N2a, involvement of a single ipsilateral mediastinal or subcarinal station, and N2b, involvement of multiple mediastinal stations [1].
- M1c now has two subgroups: M1c1, multiple extrathoracic metastases in one organ system, and M1c2, in multiple organ systems; both remain stage IVB [1].
- These combinations changed stage: T1N1 from IIB to IIA, T1N2a from IIIA to IIB, T3N2a from IIIB to IIIA, and T2aN2b and T2bN2b from IIIA to IIIB [1]. All other combinations keep their 8th-edition stage [1, 2].
Practical notes
- The 9th-edition proposals were tested on more than 76,000 patients with non-small cell lung cancer in the IASLC international database, using both clinical and pathological stage [1].
- The prefix c is used for clinical stage (before treatment) and p for pathological stage (after surgery).
- For a plain explanation of the stages and treatment for patients, see lung cancer.
